Since you asked this question I have also received a couple of emails seconding this concern. We had a meeting this morning to finalize a plan for participants who are uncomfortable with Facebook. It is attached to this comment.

Hi Toni! You will certainly get the best value out of the conference if you have a Facebook account (even under a pseudonym) so you can participate in the community aspect of the conference.
We are working on a way to support those who don't feel comfortable with Facebook to take classes and get access to the conference specials. More details about this option will be available June 23 when registration opens.
